Camu Camu – the little vitamin C bomb from South America

Every child knows it, and it has long been considered the ultimate immune booster: vitamin C. For some time now, a small sour fruit from the Amazon region has been causing a stir, and not just in research, because its vitamin C content far exceeds anything known to date: Camu Camu. The berry contains about forty times as much vitamin C as an orange. But not only that. It provides us with other important vital substances such as organic iron, B vitamins and amino acids. Full of antioxidants, Camu Camu is also a natural anti-inflammatory and mood enhancer. Let us tell you what other benefits this little vitamin C bomb has to offer!

Camu Camu – What is It?

This exotic fruit is being hailed as the new superfood. But what exactly is Camu Camu? Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a shrub from the myrtle family that is native to South America. More specifically, the western Amazon region. The camu camu shrub, which can grow up to eight meters high, grows mainly in Peru, but also in Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. The round, orange-red fruits, about three centimeters in size, resemble small apples and taste fruity and slightly tart. They are also known as rumberry or bayberry fruit.

Camu Camu – A Proven Amazonian Medicinal Plant

Until recently, this superfruit was relatively unknown in this country. The indigenous people of the South American rainforest have long valued and used camu camu as a medicinal plant for its many health benefits. It is said to have energizing, revitalizing, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In its native country, the Camu Camu berry is mostly consumed raw or in juice form.

Camu Camu – Concentrated Vitality

What the indigenous peoples have known for thousands of years is slowly making its way to our shores: the nutrient-rich fruit of the Camu Camu bush is a real vitamin bomb!

On average, 100 grams of the fruit contain 2 grams of vitamin C. An orange, on the other hand, has just over 50 mg per 100 g of pulp. Other proven sources of vitamin C such as blackcurrants, rose hips, sea buckthorn or acerola berries cannot compete.

This makes Camu Camu the fruit with the highest vitamin C content in the world!

Unlike Lemons & Oranges, Camu Camu Has:

30 times more vitamin C
10 times more iron
3 times more vitamin B3 (niacin)
2 times more vitamin B2 (riboflavin)

And That’s not All!

The content of vitamins B1, B2 and B3 as well as beta-carotene is also absolutely impressive. In terms of minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium, as well as phytochemicals, Camu Camu also scores top marks. The latter, together with vitamin C, are considered to be highly effective antioxidants.

The berries also contain amino acids and proteins. With so much concentrated vital substance power, it is no wonder that the South American berry is said to have a multitude of positive effects on our health.

Where Can I Get Camu Camu?

The high demand for this vitamin-rich fruit, especially in Europe, has led to the over-exploitation of wild plants in many places. In the meantime, the Camu Camu plant is also cultivated on plantations.

In Germany, Camu Camu is only available in powder form. The fruits are dried in the sun directly after harvesting and then ground into powder. Sometimes the berries are shock frozen in a special process and then peeled and ground. When buying a camu camu product, make sure that the powder is naturally pure and from a cultivated source.
